Start-Up Energy Transition (SET) is a global innovation platform supporting innovation in the energy transition. Each year, young international companies that contribute to the success of the energy transition with their products can apply for the ‘Start-Up Energy Transition Awards (SET Awards) and nominate their innovative solutions in 5 different categories covering the clean energy spectrum.
This year, Qlayers was selected as one of the top 100 companies worldwide to make an impact on energy transition by helping energy-intensive industries become more sustainable. This is done by changing the way that wind turbine blades are coated.
Qlayers’ BL8 robot is designed to coat wind turbine blades with a fully automated process and with no overspray. The patented spray shielding system increases coating precision and speed while eliminating overspray and reducing paint wastes significantly.
Moreover, Qlayers is currently the only company worldwide to apply functional coatings by applying sharkskin microstructures on surfaces such as blades.
These printed riblets can reduce drag with air by 3-5%. This means that for 2MW wind turbine blades, applying microstructures can increase the energy output up to 264.000kWh per year.
Qlayers’ ambition is to change the coating application system for big energy-intensive companies so that it has a less harmful impact on the environment.
