The current state of coating labor market

According to the Painter Insight Monitor 2020, the shortage of skilled painters in Europe is particularly prevalent in the Netherlands and Germany, with 80-86% of companies in these regions reporting a lack of qualified painters. Unfortunately, this situation has shown little improvement over the past two years, as the shortage still persists with a staggering 90% deficit of skilled painters in both countries as of 2022.(1), (2)

 

The perceived shortages of skilled painters have echoed throughout Europe, causing concern across the industry. In Spain, for example, when interviewed, only 45% of the painters taking part in the Painter Insight Monitor 2021 report thought that there will be a shortage of skilled workers. However, that number surged to 69% within only one year. The situation in Denmark is even direr, with perceived shortages increasing from 56% in 2020 to a staggering 85% just two years later.

 

The expanding age gap in the labor market

What was once perceived as a shortage is now becoming a harsh reality, as the average age of European painters continues to rise steadily year after year. In fact, the boomer generation currently accounts for a significant 25% of the entire painter workforce, and in about a decade, they will be retiring from the field they have dedicated their talents to.

 

Meanwhile, the younger generation, under 35 years old, is steadily decreasing in numbers. In 2020, they constituted approximately 10% of the overall workforce, but that figure has dwindled to a mere 7%.
